10:45 a.m: Ugunja IEBC assures voters of safety and credibility

Ugunja By-Election: IEBC Vice Chairperson Fahima Araphat has assured Ugunja residents that all mechanisms are in place to ensure a free, fair, and credible by-election.

Speaking at the Ugunja constituency tallying center in Ambira High School, Commissioner Araphat emphasized the commission’s commitment to peaceful elections, urging registered voters to turn out without fear.

“We have done all the preparations to ensure that the elections will be free, fair and credible,” Araphat stated.

She confirmed that comprehensive security measures are in place, with security personnel being deployed across all 116 polling centres and tallying stations to safeguard both voters and polling officials. The Vice Chairperson further appealed to residents to maintain peace and unity throughout the process.

Dominic Wetang’ula, the father of National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang’ula, today cast his vote at Namakhele Primary School during the Chewele–Kabuchai Ward by-elections.

He urged residents to turn out in large numbers and exercise their democratic right without fear.

He also encouraged young people who have attained the age of 18 to register as voters so they can participate in the 2027 General Election, emphasizing that elections are a vital exercise that shapes the future of any progressive nation.

7:30 a.m. EAT: IEBC Confirms Smooth Operations

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reports that the voting process in various polling stations is going on smoothly as of 6:30 a.m. Polling stations opened promptly at 6:00 a.m. and are scheduled to close at 5:00 p.m.

The IEBC has confirmed its standard procedure: any lost time during polling will be recovered at closing, and all voters still in the queue by 5:00 p.m. will be allowed to cast their ballots.

6:00 a.m. EAT: Polls Open

The 22 by-elections, involving 181 candidates across different electoral areas, officially commence. Voters begin queuing at the 134 polling centres across the 14 affected counties.
