17-year-old Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf arrested for disrespecting Kenya’s flag

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) have arrested 17-year-old Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf for disrespecting Kenya’s national flag at Nyayo Stadium during a football match between Mogadishu City Club and Police FC.

This was after two suspects were captured in a video, while performing indecent acts with the national flag of Kenya on September 20, 2025 at Nyayo Stadium.

In a statement on Thursday September 25, 2025, the DCI noted that  the act was both unlawful and deeply offensive to the values of Kenya.

“Section 2B of The National Flag Emblem & Names Act, Cap 99 states that;  Any person who shows disrespect, in speech, manner or writing, to or with reference to the National Anthem, or to any specified emblem, specified likeness or specified name, or any representation thereof, shall be guilty of an offence,” read part of the DCI report.

In addition, the DCI explained that efforts to arrest the remaining individual who is believed to be within the country are in place.

This comes a day after the Somali football club offered an apology over the incident, after the viral video sparked outrage across social media and among Kenyans.

The club quickly issued a statement, condemning the actions of its fans and seeking to repair the damage.

In their official statement, Mogadishu City Club did not mince words. They expressed deep regret for the behaviour and immediately distanced themselves from the individuals involved.

“On behalf of Mogadishu City Club, we strongly condemn this act and extend our deepest apologies to the Government and People of Kenya. Such behaviour has no place in football or in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship that this competition represents.”
