Police in Kajiado County have launched investigations after more than 20 suspects escaped after being caught while slaughtering 34 donkeys at Kichakani in Ereteti, Kajiado West.
Reports indicate that the suspects had slaughtered the donkeys, intending to transport and sell the meat in Nairobi.
Police recovered two vehicles and one motorcycle from the crime scene as the suspects escaped into the nearby bushes after being confronted by angry locals.
A spot check by TV47 Digital revealed donkey carcasses scattered at the scene along the riverbank in Ereteti village.
Some donkeys had been skinned and the meat packed into bags, while others were awaiting processing.
According to Gideon Ndapaya, the number of donkeys slaughtered was likely higher than what was found at the scene.
At the same time, area Chief Edward Mopel said that such incidents are not new in the area.
Meanwhile, animal rights activists, led by Sylvester Wakhu, condemned the act, noting that illegal donkey slaughter has become increasingly widespread in Kajiado and other neighbouring counties, with intentions of supplying the meat to Nairobi.
Additionally, Kajiado West Public Health Officer Jeremiah Lalaito urged residents to be vigilant and ensure they consume meat that has been certified by public health.
