Three people were confirmed dead and three others sustained serious injuries after an accident involving two muguka transporting vehicles and a motorbike along the Mwea-Embu Highway in Kirinyaga County.

The accident occurred on Sunday September 14, 2025 in the morning when a Toyota Probox collided head-on with a boda boda, killing the rider on the spot.

According to witnesses, the two cars, both ferrying muguka, were speeding alongside each other heading towards Makutano from Ngurubani.

The drivers of the two vehicles appeared to be competing to arrive in Nairobi at the earliest time possible to supply muguka. 

One of the vehicles collided with a boda boda rider, who was coming from the opposite direction.

Images and videos of the incident showed the extent of damage at the scene, as the highway was littered with car parts. 

“There were two vehicles ferrying muguka. They were moving very fast. In the process, a boda boda rider was hit, and the driver also lost his life,” said one witness at the scene.

Another witness confirmed the vehicles were racing for muguka markets in Nairobi. 

“They were speeding and overtaking recklessly. One of the cars met a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction as it overtook a tuk-tuk. There was no space. The car collided head-on with the boda boda rider, who died on the spot,” the witness said. 

At the same time, area residents flagged the location as a black spot, calling on authorities to either expand the road or install bumps.

The motorbike rider and the driver of one of the cars died on the spot.

A pillion passenger who suffered head injuries died  later in the afternoon while undergoing treatment in hospital.
