39 people killed in stampede during political rally in India

A massive political gathering in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu turned to tragedy on Saturday September 27, 2025 in the evening when a stampede-like situation resulted in the deaths of at least 39 people. More than 80 others were injured in the crush.

The incident occurred in Karur district during a rally for actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The devastating crowd surge claimed the lives of men, women, and children. The deceased include 17 women, 12 men, and 10 children. In total, at least 39 people were killed and over 80 people were injured and taken to local hospitals.

Tamil Nadu’s Health Minister, Ma Subramanian, confirmed the initial casualty figures. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation.

Early reports and eyewitness accounts suggest a combination of factors led to the tragedy. A huge crowd, estimated to be far larger than anticipated by organisers, had gathered along the Karur–Erode highway for the rally.

Reports indicate that the actor-politician’s arrival was delayed by several hours then the crowd had been waiting in intense heat without sufficient food or water.

A sudden surge occurred as the leader arrived and began his address, with people pushing forward to get closer to the campaign vehicle.

Witnesses also spoke of a moment of panic after a floodlight connected to a generator went off, and a separate announcement was made regarding a missing child.

One eyewitness, R K Nirmal, described the chaos:

“Everything was normal until Vijay came to the campaign venue. Suddenly, floodlights connected to a generator turned off… people panicked, and then everyone ran helter-skelter.”

The shocking news prompted an immediate reaction from India’s political leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Prime Minister took to social media to express his condolences, calling the incident “deeply saddening.”

“The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones.”

Mr Modi also offered prayers for the rapid recovery of all those injured.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has announced an inquiry commission, headed by a retired judge, to thoroughly probe the circumstances that led to the stampede.

In addition to the investigation, the state government has confirmed financial aid for the victims’ families. A compensation of ₹10 lakh (approx. Ksh 1.3M) has been announced for the families of those who died.

Ministers and senior police officials were dispatched to Karur to oversee relief efforts and medical assistance.

Actor-politician Vijay also released a statement, saying his “heart is shattered” and that he was “writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain.”
