8-year-old pupil dies after falling from a merry-go-round swing during school trip

On Thursday, August 28, a tragic incident unfolded at Arina Primary School in Kisumu County, resulting in the untimely death of an eight year old pupil.

The report, officially filed under OB. 58/28/2025 at 5:30 PM at the Kisumu Central Police Station, details a heartbreaking accident that occurred during the school’s afternoon games session.

According to Millicent Obara, the school’s head teacher, the incident took place at approximately 3:45pm. Pauline Akinyi, a Grade Two South pupil, was playing with her classmates on a six-seater iron merry-go-round when she accidentally fell.

In the course of the fall, she was struck on the head by one of the rotating seats, which was still in motion. The impact left her with a severe head injury and heavy bleeding.

Immediate assistance was rendered by teachers Dorca Momanyi and Paul Okumu, who quickly rushed the injured child to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite their swift response and the efforts of medical personnel, Pauline succumbed to her injuries at around 4:10 pm while undergoing treatment.

Her body was later transferred to the hospital’s mortuary, where it awaits further postmortem examination and funeral arrangements.

This tragic event has left the school community in mourning, raising urgent questions about playground safety and supervision during recreational activities. The loss of such a young life is a painful reminder of the importance of ensuring that play equipment is regularly inspected and that children are closely monitored during use.

Kisumu OCPD Bakari Mwanauli says authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Grief counselors will dispatched to the school to support students and staff as they come to terms with the devastating loss of one of their own.
