8 years of hope, one obstacle: height stands between Idris and his dream of joining police service

For eight years, Idris Kiprop has woken up to the same dream — to wear the police uniform and serve his country. Every recruitment season in Baringo, he has shown up determined, hopeful, and prepared. But each time, the same obstacle has stood in his way: his height.

On November 17, 2025 in Baringo Central, Idris once again joined dozens of other hopefuls on the  recruitment grounds, as candidates went through physical checks, endurance tests, and document verification. But for Idris, the outcome felt painfully familiar.

With only one year left before he hits the upper age limit for police recruitment, this was not just another attempt — it was a race against time. He had even attended the National Youth Service (NYS), believing the training would strengthen his chances and finally tilt luck in his favour.

Yet, just like the years before, Idris’ dream slipped through his fingers.

When the officers ruled him out over the same height requirement that has trailed him for nearly a decade, emotions ran high. Frustrated and feeling wronged, Idris confronted the recruiting team, insisting he deserved a chance. The brief argument captured the desperation and heartbreak of a young man who has never stopped trying.

But the officers stood their ground.

Moses Kirong, the recruitment officer in charge of Baringo Central, said the process is strictly guided by national procedures that leave no room for exceptions. He confirmed that the turnout in Baringo Central was relatively low, with only 12 candidates expected to be recruited — a number too small to bend the rules.

“We follow the laid-down guidelines,” Kirong stated, emphasizing the fairness of the exercise despite the disappointment it brings to some candidates.

Idris walked away once more without the dream he has chased for nearly a decade. With just a single year left before age disqualifies him permanently, the reality of time running out weighs heavier than ever.
