86-year-old Gen. Moses Ali retains seat in 2026 Uganda Parliamentary Elections

First Ugandan Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Moses Ali has retained his Adjumani West parliamentary seat after emerging victorious in the 2026 General Election.

Contesting on the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, Ali defeated three rivals to secure another term in Parliament.

According to results released by Adjumani District Electoral Commission registrar Christine Acai, Gen. Ali garnered 12,854 votes, beating his closest challengers. Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Patrick Tandripasi came second with 11,770 votes.

Independent candidate Gasper Draga polled 522 votes, while National Unity Platform (NUP) contender Stephen Lyo finished last with 293 votes.

Now 86 years old, Ali is one of Uganda’s longest-serving politicians, with decades of experience in both the military and political arenas.

Throughout his career, he has held several high-profile government positions, including serving as Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament.

Despite his electoral win, his candidacy has drawn public debate.

Ahead of the elections, activists led by human rights defender Ssuuna James Kiggala petitioned the Constitutional Court, seeking to block his nomination.

The petition raised concerns over his advanced age and health, arguing that these factors could affect his ability to effectively represent his constituents.

However, Gen. Ali’s supporters have dismissed these concerns, insisting that he remains capable of serving.

They cite his long-standing public service record and continued grassroots backing in Adjumani West as proof of sustained voter confidence.

His re-election comes after a closely contested NRM primary election, in which he retained the party flag by securing 8,609 votes against his closest rival, Nixon Owole, who garnered 4,492 votes.

During the campaign period, Gen. Ali highlighted plans to complete key development projects in the constituency. These include the construction of the Laropi bridge across the River Nile, upgrading health facilities, tarmacking major roads, and improving access to clean water and electricity, especially in rural communities.
