“9 discharged, 7 still hospitalised and 2 in critical condition” – Babu Owino visits injured protestors at KNH

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino visited injured victims of the protests that took place on Tuesday, June 17, at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Among the 16 brought, the MP says nine (9) have since been discharged, and seven (7) are still hospitalised, with 2 in critical condition, one of them being the young man shot at close range by the police during the protests.

In a statement, Babu Owino painted a picture of the condition of the injured victims, saying that the injuries were targeted attacks and not accidental.

“What I witnessed today is nothing short of a massacre. One patient has seven gunshot wounds to the back. Two others were shot in the eye. Another has a gunshot wound in the the eye. Another has a gunshot wound in the leg. One was shot in the neck, and another at the lower back. These were not accidents. These were deliberate, targeted attacks on unarmed civilians, children of this republic,” he wrote.

Protests took place in Nairobi and Mombasa and several other towns in Kenya over the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’, who died in police custody.

Babu Owino condemned the use of live bullets against protesters, adding that no Kenyan should be hunted down for expressing their views.

“This is not the Kenya we want. No Kenyan should be hunted for expressing their views or standing up for their future. The use of live bullets against protesters, many of whom were peacefully exercising their constitutional rights, is criminal and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”

He called upon President William Ruto to take full responsibility for the happenings, saying that blood spilt is on the hands of those who gave shoot-to-kill orders.

“We will not be cowed. We will not stop demanding justice. And we will not stop standing with the people of Kenya until those responsible are held to account,” the MP concluded.
