Israeli prosecutors have charged a terminally ill 73-year-old woman with planning an assassination attempt against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu using a rocket-propelled grenade.
According to court documents, the woman, a Tel Aviv-based anti-government activist whose name remains undisclosed, allegedly sought to take the Prime Minister’s life as a final act before her death.
She viewed her plan as a form of national sacrifice, declaring her intent to “save” Israel from what she considered a destructive leadership.
The indictment states that after learning of her medical diagnosis, the woman approached a fellow activist, confiding in him about her desire to secure a rocket launcher and carry out the assassination.
She is also accused of urging him to gather information about Netanyahu’s travel plans and security arrangements to assist her mission.
Despite her persistence, the man refused to take part in the plot and attempted to talk her out of it. When his efforts failed, he reported her to the authorities, prompting her arrest.
Prosecutors argue that the woman’s willingness to die as a “martyr” and her unwavering statements about carrying out the plan demonstrate that she still poses a serious threat.
As a result, they have requested that she remain under house arrest until trial proceedings are complete.
This is not the first time threats have been directed at the Israeli prime minister. In 2023, a man was arrested after allegedly posting death threats against Netanyahu on social media.
Political assassinations have left a lasting mark on Israeli history. Most notably, former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in 1995 by a far-right extremist opposed to the Oslo Accords with the Palestinians.
