AA Kenya launches new IDP allowing Kenyans to drive legally in more than 150 countries

The Automobile Association of Kenya (AA Kenya) has launched a new International Driving Permit (IDP) that allows Kenyan drivers to operate vehicles in over 150 countries without needing local driving tests. This move aims to curb the rising cases of Kenyans facing legal issues abroad due to counterfeit permits.

The new IDP is tamper-proof, features strong security measures, and is digital, enabling Interpol to verify it online instantly. According to Francis Theuri, CEO of AA Kenya, this will make it easier for Kenyans traveling for work, studies, business, or leisure to rent vehicles from international agencies and for insurance companies abroad to confirm coverage for foreign drivers.

The IDP is expected to create opportunities, especially for young people seeking jobs that involve driving, as the government encourages more Kenyans to travel and work abroad. You can apply for the IDP by visiting any of AA Kenya‘s 95+ branches nationwide.

How to apply

To apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Kenya, you’ll need to visit any AA Kenya branch with the required documents, including:

  • Valid Kenyan Driving License: Original or copy
  • Passport-size Photos: Two
  • National ID: Copy
  • AA Membership Card: Optional, for discounted fees

The application process involves:

  1. Filling out the application form at an AA Kenya branch
  2. Paying the application fee, which depends on the IDP validity period (1-3 years)
  3. Submitting the documents and payment receipt
  4. Receiving your IDP, usually within 20 minutes

The benefits of having an IDP include:

  • Global Recognition: Accepted in over 150 countries
  • Legal Protection: Avoids fines and legal issues abroad
  • Easy Car Rentals: Simplifies renting vehicles internationally
  • Insurance Compliance: Validates coverage for foreign drivers

The fees for IDP application are :

  • 1 Year: KSh 6,000 (AA members), KSh 9,000 (non-members)
  • 2 Years: KSh 11,000 (AA members), KSh 16,000 (non-members)
  • 3 Years: KSh 15,000 (AA members), KSh 24,000 (non-members)
