Faithfuls of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Mbita Church were left stranded on Sunday February 22, 2026, after discovering that their place of worship had been demolished by individuals suspected to be land fraudsters.
Speaking to the media at the church compound in Mbita, Simon Onyango, the Bishop of the ACK Southern Nyanza Diocese, said the destroyed property is valued at more than KSh 50 million.

Bishop Onyango stated that the church has occupied the land since 1985 and was officially issued with an allotment letter in 1991, terming the demolition illegal and unjustified.
“This is a clear case of land fraud. The church has all the legal documents, and we do not understand how such an act could be carried out in broad daylight,” he said.

The church leadership is now calling on relevant authorities, particularly the Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Alice Wahome, to conduct immediate investigations into the incident and ensure the land is restored to its rightful owners.
Meanwhile, congregants expressed anger and disbelief over the incident, saying the demolition has disrupted worship and community activities as investigations begin.
