Activist and journalist Hanifa Adan is finally on the verge of receiving the urgent ear surgery she has long needed. After a deeply emotional plea on X that resonated widely, she announced that the operation is scheduled to happen soon.
Just days ago, Hanifa shared a candid and distressing update on her deteriorating health of her battling chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM), a long-term ear infection that has progressively impacted her hearing, posting:
“My ears are getting worse by the day, my hearing fades a little more each day, and pus keeps oozing out. Most mornings, I wake up to complete silence, unable to hear anything.”
She further explained that while hearing aids offered some help, they did nothing to stop the persistent infection or repair the internal damage.
“Every hospital I’ve been to only offers temporary fixes, but what I truly need is surgery to repair the wounds inside my ears that are causing all these problems,” she wrote.
Her appeal for help in finding a reputable Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) hospital struck a chord with many Kenyans, sparking an outpouring of support.
In another post, she admitted, “I’ve been searching for a good ENT hospital where I can finally get my surgery done. I need my ears treated urgently.”
The response was overwhelming, social media users, well-wishers, and medical professionals responded with recommendations, resources, and words of encouragement. The wave of compassion and collective effort has now resulted in a breakthrough.
Hanifa has secured an appointment with a specialist and is set to undergo surgery that, while unlikely to restore her full hearing, is expected to halt the infection and bring much-needed relief.
In a follow-up post, she shared her gratitude as she appreciates Kenyans for coming in big numbers to her support with many asking whether she got a specialist and others recommending one.
“Good morning, my loves. I honestly have no words. I woke up to hundreds of messages and comments, and each one means the world to me. Thank you, truly, for taking the time to help me find a specialist,” she posted.
The surgery which she said is scheduled for August 13, 2025 is more than just a medical procedure, it is a testament to the power of community, proof that even in moments of vulnerability, reaching out can draw together the strength of many to change a single life.”Tomorrow morning Inshallah lazima booking kwanza,” she posted on Tuesday August 12.
