Human rights activist Mwabili Mwagodi has officially recorded a statement at Diani Police Station in Kwale County, detailing a harrowing alleged abduction ordeal.
His statement, lodged under OB number 37/02/08/2025, comes after a previous attempt to file a report in Mombasa was met with resistance from police officers, a move that has been widely condemned by human rights groups.
According to a statement from the Police Reforms Working Group-Kenya (PRWG-K), Mwagodi was abducted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on July 23rd and subsequently abandoned in the Kinondo area of Kwale on July 27th.
The activist, known for his outspoken criticism of government corruption and political influence in religious institutions, claims his life is in danger.
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International Kenya, Haki Africa, and Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI), are rallying behind Mwagodi, calling for a transparent investigation.
Irungu Houghton, Section Director for Amnesty International Kenya, stated, “Mwabili’s activism is not a crime. His disappearance, however, is. As a grave violation of human rights, it must be addressed with urgency and accountability.”
The groups are demanding not only an independent inquiry into the abduction but also a full investigation into the conduct of the police officers who initially refused to take Mwagodi’s statement.
In a joint statement, PRWG-K emphasized that “The role of police is to protect, not punish. The time to act is now—before impunity becomes the norm, and justice the exception.”
They are calling for concrete action from the Kenyan government, highlighting that Mwagodi, as a Kenyan citizen abroad, was entitled to protection under both domestic and international law.
