The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Appeals Committee has dismissed AFC Leopards SC’s appeal and upheld the Leagues and Competitions Committee (LCC) decision regarding the abandoned FKF Cup clash between AFC Leopards and Mara Sugar FC, confirming Mara Sugar’s progression to the Round of 16.
The match, scheduled for March 8, 2025, at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu, was abandoned in the 89th minute after AFC Leopards supporters invaded the pitch.
The incident followed the referee’s decision to overturn an earlier awarded penalty to Leopards, sparking protests that forced the match to be halted.
Following a detailed review, the LCC found AFC Leopards fans responsible for causing the abandonment. Citing Article 6.4(iv) of the Mozzart Bet Cup Regulations and Article 3.5.6 of the FKF Rules and Regulations Governing Football in Kenya, the committee ruled that AFC Leopards would forfeit the match and awarded the victory to Mara Sugar.
The regulations provide: “A club will forfeit any match which was abandoned because of the misconduct of their members or supporters.” This rule is designed to ensure safety and accountability at football matches.
The Appeals Committee, after considering AFC Leopards’ challenge, upheld the LCC’s decision and dismissed the appeal. In addition, AFC Leopards SC received a formal warning over the misconduct of their supporters and was directed to implement stronger measures to prevent future incidents of hooliganism and violence.
With the ruling now confirmed, Mara Sugar FC will face Compel FC in the Round of 16 on May 21, 2025, in Kisumu. The winner will meet Kenya Police FC in the quarter-finals.
