AFCON 2025 Quarter-finals locked in as as African giants clash in Morocco

The quarter-final line-up for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 has been confirmed, setting the stage for a series of high-stakes clashes as Africa’s premier football tournament enters its decisive phase.

Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire and record seven-time winners Egypt headline an imposing last-eight field that also includes former champions Senegal, Cameroon, Nigeria and Algeria, alongside ambitious Mali and tournament hosts Morocco.

The eight nations sealed their places in the quarter-finals following the conclusion of an action-packed Round of 16 on Tuesday night, continuing a tournament that has delivered drama, intensity and quality in equal measure.

Egypt, the most decorated nation in AFCON history, were pushed to the limit before edging Benin 3–1 after extra time, underlining their experience in knockout football.

Holders Côte d’Ivoire kept their title defence alive with an emphatic 3–0 victory over Burkina Faso, maintaining hopes of back-to-back continental crowns.

Hosts Morocco, backed by passionate home support, progressed with a narrow win over Tanzania, while Senegal, champions in 2021, extended their impressive tournament consistency by dispatching Sudan.

Mali once again showcased their resilience, eliminating Tunisia on penalties despite playing much of the match with ten men.

Nigeria flexed their attacking muscle with a dominant victory over Mozambique, inspired by a brace from Victor Osimhen, while Algeria needed extra time to overcome DR Congo, with substitute Adil Boulbina striking late to seal qualification.

Among the standout quarter-final ties is a mouthwatering showdown between Egypt and defending champions Côte d’Ivoire, a clash of continental giants set for Saturday.

Hosts Morocco face a stern test against five-time champions Cameroon in Friday night’s marquee encounter, while an all–West African duel pits Senegal against Mali earlier the same day.

Elsewhere, Nigeria and Algeria renew their rivalry in what promises to be a fiercely contested quarter-final on Saturday afternoon.

With four blockbuster fixtures lined up over two days, the battle for continental supremacy is set to intensify as AFCON 2025 edges closer to its climax in Morocco.
