Two amateur boxers, Majembe (real name Portifas Odipo) and Mbavu Destroyer AKA Weka Mawe who went viral on the internet, will step into a professional-grade ring this Saturday, April 4, at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi, for what is now one of the most talked-about live events Kenya has seen in years.

Organised by comedian-cum-digital creator Oga Obinna and branded as Vurugu Fight Night, the Majembe versus Mbavu Destroyer bout has pulled in presidential pledges, corporate sponsors, politicians, and pastors, all because two ordinary guys captured the imagination of an entire nation and refused to let the moment go to waste.

President William Ruto handed each boxer Ksh 1 million for training and went further by sponsoring 2,000 tickets so fans can attend for free.

Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri pledged Ksh 2 million toward the event, businessman Oketch Salah added Ksh200,000 in cash, and Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, wife of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, purchased 400 tickets worth Ksh400,000 to send a group of men through the doors.

One corporate sponsor has sweetened the pot further by putting a brand-new Toyota Noah on the line for whoever wins.

Then there is the commentary box. DJ Afro, the man born James Muigai who turned kung-fu films and Bollywood blockbusters into deeply Kenyan experiences through Sheng, Swahili, and raw humour, will call the fight live, his first time ever behind a ringside microphone.

Entire generations grew up saving lunch money just to watch his narrations in local video halls.

Phrases like “Pozi tena pozi kabisa” are practically tattooed on the Kenyan consciousness.

Hearing that voice react to a live knockout in real time is alone worth the price of a ticket.

Vurugu Fight Night was never supposed to be this big. Now it cannot be anything less.
