Kenya Airways has confirmed a leadership transition at the national carrier, with Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Allan Kilavuka entering terminal leave as his contract nears its conclusion.
In a statement released Friday, the airline’s Board highlighted Kilavuka’s six-year tenure, during which he navigated Kenya’s flag-carrier through the most turbulent period in recent aviation history.
Kilavuka assumed leadership amidst the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, steering the airline through cost containment measures and strategic changes designed to preserve operations.
The Board noted that under his guidance, the airline saw improvements in key performance areas, including revenue growth, increasing passenger numbers and expanded freight volumes developments that helped reinforce KQ’s resilience and market competitiveness.
“The Board and management of Kenya Airways extend sincere appreciation to Mr Kilavuka for his service, commitment and steady leadership. We wish him well in his future endeavours,” the company said in its announcement.
To maintain operational continuity, the Board appointed Captain George Kamal, the airline’s Chief Operating Officer, as Acting Group Managing Director and CEO, effective from 16 December 2025. The move comes as the airline initiates a competitive process to recruit a substantive chief executive.
Captain Kamal brings nearly three decades of aviation experience spanning the Middle East and Africa. His professional journey includes senior roles such as Operations Director at Air Arabia and Chief Operations and Executive Officer at Iraqi Airways.
He holds a Doctorate in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Aviation Management, with significant expertise in digital innovation and modern aviation systems.
The Board reaffirmed its support for Captain Kamal during the interim period, underscoring its commitment to completing Kenya Airways’ ongoing turnaround strategy.
This blueprint aims to cement operational reliability, drive sustainable growth and attract a strategic investor with shareholder backing.
