AFC Leopards chairman Boniface Ambani has appealed to supporters to remain behind the team following Saturday’s 4–1 defeat to Mathare United at Nyayo Stadium, apologising for the result and acknowledging the challenges the club faced during the match.
Leopards had taken the lead in the 59th minute but conceded four goals in the final stages as Mathare United mounted a strong comeback.
The defeat denied Ingwe the chance to reduce the gap to league leaders Gor Mahia, who sit at the top of the table on 53 points while Leopards remain second on 43 points, three ahead of third-placed Shabana.
In a statement, Ambani thanked fans for their strong support despite the disappointing outcome.
“First, I would like to thank our fans for turning up in numbers and supporting the boys to the last minute. It has been our goal this season to win the league. Secondly, on behalf of the team, I apologise for yesterday’s heavy loss,” Ambani said.
The chairman noted that injuries to key players had affected the team’s balance, pointing to the absence of Humphrey Katasi, Kayci Odhiambo, Emmanuel Lwangu and Brian Nyongesa.
“I acknowledge the challenges posed by multiple injuries within the squad. While injuries are not an excuse, the club signed players who are expected to step up when called upon,” he added.
Ambani also admitted the team struggled offensively during the match and assured fans that steps are being taken to address the issues.
“The team’s attack was very blunt in our match against Mathare United. As the club chairman, I assure supporters that measures are being taken to address these issues and we will need to strengthen our squad to have enough squad depth in future.”
Despite the setback, Ambani urged supporters to continue backing the team as they aim to bounce back.
“As a fan, remember that the club needs you most in times like this. We focus on the next match,” he said.
AFC Leopards will now turn their attention to their next league fixture against Nairobi United scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, as they seek to return to winning ways in their pursuit of a first league title since 1998.
