Kenyans’ social media mischief and online banter once again proved unmatched, with English Championship side Charlton Athletic FC becoming the latest target of the famed KOT/KOX following the signing of Harambee Stars defender Collins Sichenje.
Charlton Athletic’s social media pages were flooded with humorous jibes from Kenyan fans shortly after the club announced the arrival of the defender, leaving the club’s social media administrator likely amused, tickled, or overwhelmed by the wave of online engagement.
Kenyans wasted no time commenting on photos of the Kenyan international shared on the Charlton Athletic FC page, with netizens offering playful advice, cultural reminders, and tongue-in-cheek demands in what has become a familiar pattern whenever a local player secures a move abroad.
Among the comments that drew attention were:
Bwaí Sabarre wrote: “Make him captain right away. He must also play 90+3 minutes. No benching unless dead. And award him a winning bonus even if the team draws or loses.”
Destiny Hi commented: “Now all Kenyans will be supporting Charlton and make sure Collo eats ugali daily.”
Nick Machira added: “Never call him Collins, call him Sichenje.”
Adeh Abdulkadir posted: “Ugali. Ugali. Ugali. Google it. Make it. For him. Mrenda would be an added advantage. Google that too.”
Robinson Kf asked: “Has our boy been given a heavy breakfast?”
Chris Mwangi joked: “Changing room should have a posho mill. He takes ugali and mrenda during half-time. And don’t take long before making him captain — we have impatience issues.”
Eliud Diligon added: “Posting him without a Kenyan flag is disrespect.”
The online buzz followed confirmation that Collins Sichenje has completed a move to English Championship side Charlton Athletic, describing the transfer as a major milestone in his football journey.
Charlton Athletic confirmed the signing of the 22-year-old Kenyan international from Serbian SuperLiga club FK Vojvodina, with Sichenje penning a three-and-a-half-year contract to become the Addicks’ seventh signing of the January transfer window.
Speaking after completing the move, Sichenje expressed his excitement at joining the London-based club and underlined the importance of the opportunity.
“It feels amazing to be here. It’s a good club with a good project and I’m ready to start working. It’s a big step for my career,” Sichenje said.
“It’s a good opportunity to keep working, developing and help the team, so I just need to be humble and keep working — that’s the goal.”
Charlton Athletic Managing Director James Rodwell revealed that the club had been monitoring the defender for an extended period, noting that his signing aligns with the club’s long-term recruitment strategy.
