Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has dropped a couple of high-profile stars from the club’s pre-season tour squad.
This bold move signals a major shake-up following a dismal 2024/25 campaign that saw the Red Devils finish a disappointing 15th in the Premier League and lose the UEFA Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
Amorim, who took the reins in November 2024, is now set to oversee his first full season at Old Trafford, and he’s wasting no time in reshaping the squad.
New recruits Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford have already joined, with the club actively seeking further reinforcements in the transfer market.
Manchester United is gearing up for the Premier League Summer Series in the United States, where they will face West Ham, AFC Bournemouth, and Everton.
The club officially announced a 32-man squad for the trip, with the anticipated exclusion of some senior players.
Among the notable omissions are Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony. Their absence confirms earlier speculation that they are slated to depart Old Trafford this summer.
This follows the earlier loan move of star forward Marcus Rashford to Barcelona, after Amorim clearly indicated he was not part of his future plans.
Sancho and Antony spent the entirety or a significant portion of the last season away from Old Trafford on loan spells.
Jadon Sancho, on loan at Chelsea, was a pivotal player for the Blues, bagging five goals and 10 assists to help them secure a top-four finish in the Premier League and win the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Despite his impressive form, a permanent £25 million move to Stamford Bridge fell through due to a failure to agree on personal terms, leading to his return to United for a reported £5 million loan fee.
Antony spent the latter half of the season on loan at Real Betis, where he contributed significantly with nine goals and five assists, helping the Spanish side reach the Conference League semi-final.
In contrast, Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho remained at United for the full season. However, his playing time significantly reduced after Amorim’s arrival in November.
Despite this, he still managed a respectable 11 goals and 10 assists. His public criticism of Amorim for benching him in the Europa League final reportedly led to the manager advising him to seek a new club.
