The chairman of Atheists in Kenya, Harrison Nyende Mumia, has been charged with multiple counts of false publication under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, after allegedly posting fake images of President William Ruto on social media. He was released on a cash bail of KSh 500,000.
According to the charge sheet, Mumia, who also uses the alias Robinson Kipruto Ngetich, is accused of knowingly publishing false information on Facebook and Instagram on 30 December 2025 while at an unknown location within Kenya.
In the first two counts, prosecutors allege that Mumia used a pseudo Facebook account under the name Robinson Kipruto Ngetich to publish images of President Ruto lying on a bed and falsely portraying him as deceased, as well as another image depicting the President on a hospital bed in a critical medical condition. The prosecution maintains that the information shared was false and that the accused knew it to be so at the time of publication.
In the third and fourth counts, Mumia is accused of publishing similar false images on his Instagram account, @harrisonmumia.
The images allegedly showed the President lying on a bed and in a critical medical condition, again falsely suggesting severe illness or death.
The charges are brought under Section 22(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act No. 5 of 2018, which criminalizes the intentional publication of false information through electronic means.
The case is set to be mentioned for further directions as investigations continue.
