The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has congratulated President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election following Tanzania’s presidential polls.
In a statement, Youssouf acknowledged the official results and extended his best wishes to President Suluhu and the people of Tanzania as they embark on a new term of governance.
While commending the peaceful conduct of voting in most regions, the AU Chairperson expressed deep regret over the loss of lives reported during post-election protests.
He conveyed condolences to the affected families and emphasized the need to protect fundamental rights and freedoms, including peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
“The Chairperson underscores the imperative of upholding fundamental rights and freedoms within the framework of the law and encourages citizens to exercise their rights in a peaceful and responsible manner,” the statement read.
Youssouf reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, urging all stakeholders to adhere to its principles of rule of law, political pluralism, and respect for human rights key foundations of stable and democratic societies.
The African Union further reiterated its readiness to support the Government and people of Tanzania in their efforts to sustain peace, national unity, and democratic governance following the elections.
