Police in Kitengela, Kajiado County, are investigating an incident where a 25-year-old man died after he was reportedly pushed from a moving Super Metro bus.
Joseph Mureithi is said to have been thrown out of the bus by its crew members following a disagreement on Tuesday, February 24 night along the Kitengela-Namanga Highway.
Police have since arrested two crew members responsible for the death of Mureithi, even as investigations continue in earnest.
What really happened?
On the fateful day, Mureithi, a petrol attendant in Athi River, finished work at around 11 pm.
He then walked to the stage along the busy highway — which is near Shalom Hospital — and that is where he boarded the Super Metro bus heading to Nairobi from Kitengela.
Eye witnesses told Citizen TV that after boarding the bus, which was overcrowded, it took off. However, shortly after the bus left the stage, Mureithi was pushed out of the vehicle while it was moving.
Aliingia kwa gari, gari ikatoka. Kufika pale chini ndio ni kama msukosuko ikaanza na huyo kijana akatolewa kwa gari akaanguka chini. Nilikuwa nafikiria ameanguka tu hivi hivi, kufika hapo kumbe ameanguka na kichwa ikapasuka,” Juma Otieno said.
The vehicle was eventually stopped by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers who were on patrol on Subaru car, and towed to Athi River Police Station. Mureithi was declared dead on arrival at Shalom Hospital.
Sole breadwinner
The family, led by Patrick Muthomi, could not fathom why the crew members would resort to push the deceased out of a moving vehicle, with reports indicating that the bus ran over him thereafter.
“Huyo ndio alikuwa first born…ni yeye alikuwa anafanya kazi at least analipia mama yake rent na anasaidia kijana mdogo mwenye ako nyuma yake. Naomba kama serikali inaweza tuangalia,” Muthomi said.
Today (Thursday, February 2), an autopsy will be conducted on the body of Mureithi.
