Babu Owino claims threats to his life ahead of Raila’s burial

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has claimed that his life is in danger, alleging that unknown individuals are planning to assassinate him on or before the burial of former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.

In a statement shared on his X social media page, the outspoken legislator said that he has received credible intelligence suggesting a plot to eliminate him before or during the funeral ceremony. He continued to add that it was his prayer that Baba be given the befitting send-off that he deserved, “devoid of unwarranted violence.”

Babu claimed that his government-assigned security has been withdrawn under unclear circumstances.

The legislator said the withdrawal of security occurred shortly after he made public statements supporting ordinary Kenyans and questioning recent government actions.

Withdrawal of my security by the government… Yesterday I stood with the people,” the MP wrote, suggesting that his stance on national issues may have triggered the move. He added by describing the security withdrawal as “in retaliation” and called it “an attack on democracy.”

This is not the first time the vocal ODM-allied MP has claimed threats to his life. In previous statements reported by KDRTV and The Star, Owino alleged being trailed by unknown individuals in a vehicle and said he had received information about possible plans to harm him.

“My life is in danger,” he said in an earlier Facebook post, adding that “a saloon car with four occupants” had been following him.

Kenyans on X had a lot to say following this, offering support for the leader they believe is one of the “good ones.”

@Josh for example tweeted saying, “Babu Owino should be protected at all cost! Whatever you guys are joking with is not something you’re prepared to deal with! Get warned!”

Another user, @ KOT OCS also had a few words to share on the app. ” Mbona some people in ODM wanapangia Babu Owino? Why? Because he’s popular? Because many people like him? Hatufai kukubali hio upuzi wanataka kufanyia Babu Owino, Babu should be respected.”

While Owino has not produced evidence of the alleged threats, his comments come amid heightened national tension and political activity following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a close ally whose burial is expected to draw thousands.

Security agencies have not yet issued an official statement regarding Owino’s claims, but police sources have previously said protection for leaders during major national events will be “comprehensive and multi-agency.”

The MP has in the past urged authorities to investigate alleged extrajudicial killings and politically linked violence, including the controversial death of Albert Ojwang, a case he said deserved transparency and justice.

As Kenya prepares for Odinga’s final send-off, Owino’s renewed security concerns highlight the deepening atmosphere of fear and suspicion surrounding political figures and supporters within the opposition.

“Standing with the people should never make one a target,” he posted recently, adding that he remains committed to “speaking truth to power.”
