Lokapel Akol,a notorious suspected bandit operating along the West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties border in West Pokot, has surrendered to authorities and handed over his AK-47 rifle amid ongoing disarmament efforts.
Addressing the media shortly after receiving the illegal firearms, West Pokot County Commissioner Khalif Abdullahi applauded the suspect and the community for collaborating with the government’s directive on fighting insecurity in Kerio Valley.

This development follows the Kenyan government’s recent announcement of a security operation in the North Rift region, alongside an amnesty program encouraging the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms.
Authorities have expressed hope that this act will inspire others to follow suit, contributing to lasting peace and stability in the region.
This comes a few days after a reformed bandit who has been troubling residents in Elgeyo Marakwet County surrendered to the police.
According to the area OCPD Zablon Otieno, so far they have received two AK-47 rifles, 39 rounds of ammunition, and three magazines from two bandits who voluntarily surrendered.
The bandit, identified as Ruto Komen, surrendered himself on September 7, 2025, handing over an AK-47 rifle he had been using, 27 rounds of ammunition, and one magazine.
Otieno said that after lengthy discussions with the bandit in his office, they were able to reach an agreement and allowed him to reunite with his family.
