Bank of Uganda warns public against using currency notes for decorations

The Bank of Uganda has issued a public notice cautioning citizens against misusing Uganda Shilling banknotes and coins, particularly in decorative displays such as money bouquets, gift arrangements, and “money cakes.”

The warning comes amid a growing trend across the region where currency is used in celebrations and social events in ways that damage its usability.

In a statement released by the central bank, the public was reminded that any act that damages or alters the physical condition of currency undermines its purpose in the financial system.

“The public is cautioned against any practice that mutilates, defaces, or compromises the integrity of Uganda Shilling currency,” the Bank of Uganda said.

The notice specifically addressed florists, event planners, designers, and individuals who use adhesive materials such as glue, pins, clips, and tape to attach banknotes together for decorative purposes.

According to the bank, such practices interfere with the normal circulation of money and create unnecessary replacement costs.

“This practice destroys the utility of banknotes, making them unusable in cash processing and distribution equipment such as cash counting machines and ATMs,” the statement explained.

The bank added that damaged notes often have to be withdrawn from circulation earlier than expected, placing an avoidable financial burden on the public.

However, the central bank clarified that giving money as a gift is still acceptable, provided the notes remain intact and usable.

“Whereas the Bank does not object to using cash as a gift, this exchange should conform to the normal use of currency to facilitate payment transactions,” the statement read.

The Bank of Uganda emphasized its commitment to protecting the national currency, noting that preserving banknotes ensures they continue to function effectively “as a medium of exchange, and store of value.”
