Benjamin Mkapa and Kasarani Stadiums to host 2024 CHAN opening and closing matches

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), in collaboration with co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, has officially announced the key venues for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. The tournament, exclusively for home-based players, is scheduled to run from August 2 to August 30, 2025, marking a highly anticipated return to East African soil since Rwanda hosted the event in 2016.

Tanzania’s iconic Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam has been chosen to host the opening match of the competition on Saturday, August 2, 2025. Uganda’s Mandela Stadium in Kampala will stage the crucial third and fourth-place playoff matches. The grand finale of the TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2024 will culminate in Kenya, with Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium set to host the final match on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

In a move that underscores CAF’s commitment to expanding the reach and inclusivity of African football, Zanzibar has also been designated as one of the host venues. Zanzibar’s Amaan Stadium recently demonstrated its capability by successfully hosting a TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup 2024/25 Final in May this year.

The group stage matches will be distributed across the host cities as follows:

  • Group A | Nairobi, Kenya: Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Zambia
  • Group B | Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
  • Group C | Kampala, Uganda: Uganda, Niger, Guinea, South Africa, Algeria
  • Group D | Zanzibar: Senegal, Congo (who replaced Equatorial Guinea after a CAF Appeals Board decision), Sudan, Nigeria

Further information regarding the full match schedule, ticketing, and fan engagement activities is expected to be communicated by CAF in due course. The joint hosting of CHAN 2024 by these three East African nations is also seen as a crucial dress rehearsal for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, which will also be co-hosted by the same trio.
