Blind girl from Seme, Kisumu County, urges well wishers to help her join Grade 10

In the heart of Kochienge village, Seme Constituency, Kisumu County, a story unfolds that is both heartbreaking and inspiring.

It is the story of Valary Akoth, a young girl whose dreams of education shine brightly even as her world appears to have been plunged into darkness.

Valary’s life changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with glaucoma, a condition that stole her vision and left her navigating life without sight.

Yet, despite this cruel twist of fate, her determination to learn has never dimmed.

Having performed well in her national examinations, she earned an invitation to join Luak Girls in Siaya for Grade 10, but her journey stalled, not by lack of ambition, but by lack of financial means.

Her mother, Maureen Anyango, speaks with a mixture of pride and anguish: “My daughter has a burning passion for learning, but our family’s humble income cannot sustain her educational needs.”

For a family living on the margins, the cost of education is an insurmountable barrier, and Valary’s dreams risk being extinguished before they can fully bloom.

The villagers of Kochienge, however, refuse to let her story end in despair.

Led by preacher Simon Odundo Salamba, they have rallied behind Valary, describing her as a disciplined and hardworking student whose character inspires all who know her.

Salamba’s words capture the urgency of their appeal: “Education is her only hope for a brighter future. We call upon leaders, organizations, and well-wishers to step in and help her continue her studies.”

Valary’s plight is not just a personal tragedy, it is a mirror reflecting the struggles of countless children in rural Kenya who face similar barriers.

Her blindness has not dimmed her vision for a better tomorrow; instead, it has illuminated the need for compassion, solidarity, and collective responsibility.

Her story is a call to action. It reminds us that when sight fades, hope must not.

In Valary’s courage, we see the resilience of a generation that refuses to surrender to circumstance.

And in the cry of Kochienge, we hear the timeless truth that education is not a privilege for the few, but a right for all.
