The home of Uganda’s opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, has become a war zone after masked soldiers stormed his home yesternight, beating his family members and isolating his wife in what Bobi Wine describes as a terrifying assault.
“A group of masked, armed soldiers has just broken into our house and beat up my family members. They have currently isolated my wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, alone. Their intentions are unclear!” Bobi Wine wrote on his social media.
Bobi Wine, who is the National Unity Platform(NUP) Party Leader, has gone into hiding after narrowly escaping what he describes as a coordinated assault by government forces.
Speaking to Al Jazeera from an undisclosed location, hooded to conceal his identity, on January 20th, 2026, Bobi Wine revealed the terrifying reality: “I managed to escape from them, but I don’t know how my family is. I know that these criminals are looking for me everywhere, and I am trying my best to keep safe.”
The threats aren’t coming from shadowy operatives.
Earlier this week, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, President Museveni’s son and Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, issued a chilling ultimatum on social media, giving Bobi Wine 48 hours to surrender to police or face being hunted down as an outlaw.
Muhoozi bragged about killing supporters and made his intentions brutally clear.
On January 20, 2026, Bobi Wine reported that drunk military personnel stationed inside his compound banged on doors late at night, cursing and daring the occupants to come out ‘if they’re men.’
Bobi Wine’s attorney Robert Amsterdam has urged global leaders to demand immediate safety guarantees.
People’s Liberation Party (PLP) Party Leader, Martha Karua, condemned what she called the “unacceptable harassment” of Wine and his family.
The Uganda Law Society has called the siege a blatant violation of personal liberty and human rights, describing Kainerugaba’s statements as “a dangerous escalation of impunity.”
