Bomet county mourns Chief Officer Erick Chepkwony, KTDA Vice Chair, after sudden death in Nairobi

The County Government of Bomet and the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) are in mourning following the sudden death of Erick Chepkwony, who served as Bomet County’s Chief Officer for Finance, ICT, and Economic Planning, and as KTDA’s National Vice Chair.

Governor Hillary Barchok confirmed the devastating news in an official statement on Thursday, expressing profound shock at the unexpected passing of a man who appeared strong and vibrant just the day before.

Chepkwony collapsed and died on the evening of Wednesday, May 21, in Nairobi. The exact cause of his death remains under investigation, with initial reports indicating he fell ill and passed away after vomiting while in the bathroom.

Governor Barchok described Chepkwony as a joyful and dedicated leader, highlighting the deep impact of his loss on both the county and the national tea sector.

“My heart goes out to his family, the people of Bomet, and the KTDA fraternity… This devastating loss feels even more profound as we remember how full of life he was just yesterday,” the Governor’s statement read, assuring Chepkwony’s family of the county government’s unwavering support.

A highly respected figure, Chepkwony made significant contributions to financial management and economic planning in Bomet County.

He had a rich public service career, previously serving in the Cooperatives and Public Works departments before his appointment as Chief Officer for Finance in September 2023.

At the national level, he was elected Vice Chairperson of KTDA in August 2024, representing Zone 9, where he tirelessly championed the interests of tea farmers, working to improve their earnings and market access.

Colleagues and associates remember Chepkwony as a committed leader, a pillar of agricultural development, and a passionate advocate for farmers’ welfare.
