Boniface Kariuki undergoes second surgery to remove bullet fragments remained in his head

Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, the vendor who was shot during the June 17 demonstration has undergone a second delicate surgery to remove bullet fragments that remained in his head.

“In the morning, he was fairing well. But at around kutoka saa nne hivi, wakaona condition yake imeanza ku deteriorate. Sasa wakaamua kufanya the second operation,” Eunice Kiragu, a relative said.

For four hours, the surgeons worked to keep him alive. Boniface, however, is still in a critical condition and is dependant on life support at the KNH Intensive Care Unit.

“Wamasema condition yake sio vizuri sana. Ako critical condition, sababu vile walikua wakiexpect, walikua wamesema ni swolen brain. Lakini wakati wameenda…wamepata kuna vitu zingine,” Eunice narrated.

While the family is holding onto hope that Boniface will recover, they urge the government to take action and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“Tunataka justice. Ju huyu mtoto tumekaa na yeye, hajai tusi mtu, hajai ibia mtu. So hio kitu tukona huzuni nayo sana,” Rosemary Njeri, another relative, said.

Meanwhile, the two officers involved in the shooting of Boniface Klinzy Masinde Barasa and Duncan Kiprono are currently detained at the Capitol Hill Police Station to allow the prosecution to complete its investigations.

This follows an agreement between the prosecution and the defence counsel, presented before the Milimani Law Courts.

His family is appealing to the government to deliver justice and ensure that the police officers responsible face the full force of the law.
