Boost for Competency-Based Learning as Wajir teachers receive ICT skills

Teachers from primary and junior schools in Wajir East and the greater Wajir West have begun a two-day training aimed at strengthening the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in classroom instruction under the UNICEF-supported Learning Management and Content Support (LMCS) Project.

Implemented by the Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC) with funding from the European Union and UNICEF, the programme seeks to enhance delivery of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum through blended learning approaches that promote learner engagement, creativity and critical thinking.

Opening the training, Wajir County Director of Education Dr. Koriyow H. Ali said effective use of ICT was critical in preparing learners for future demands. “We want our teachers to confidently use digital tools to deliver the Competency-Based Curriculum, particularly in ASAL regions where access has been limited,” he said.

The sessions are being facilitated by community trainers from the Raspberry Pi Foundation, who bring hands-on and contextual experience after undergoing extensive professional development. Teachers are being inducted on Ministry of Education–approved Raspberry Pi Foundation curriculum support materials, including lesson plans, learner notes and assessment tools aligned to national standards. Hadado Sub-County Director of Education Mr. Abdi Daud Ali noted that the training would directly improve classroom delivery, saying it would make lessons more interactive and learner-centred.

Mrs. Saadia Abdikheir, Deputy Director at the County Director of Education’s Office, said the initiative was aligned with national education policy and quality assurance standards. “Using authorised content ensures consistency in teaching and safeguards the quality of learning across our schools,” she said.

The programme has also received support from teachers’ representatives. Wajir County KNUT Secretary Mr. Noor Dahiye Bardad said continuous professional development was essential for teachers, adding that ICT skills would motivate educators and enhance learning outcomes.

Meanwhile, FCDC representative Mr. Abdullahi Hassan Maalim reaffirmed the council’s commitment to partnerships that advance education in frontier counties. He said the collaboration with the EU, UNICEF and education stakeholders was aimed at ensuring learners in ASAL regions acquire relevant, future-ready digital skills.
