Boundary dispute triggers violence leaving one dead in Marakwet East

One person has lost their life while another narrowly escaped death after being struck with arrows following a land dispute between the Kapchesum and Kachemei communities in Chesewew village, Marakwet East Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

It is reported that the conflict erupted after the two communities disagreed over the authenticity of a land map, with one side claiming that the map presented had been altered and was not the original version.

Confirming the incident, Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said that prior to the attack, security stakeholders had instructed leaders from both communities to obtain an accurate and original map to help resolve the dispute.

However, tensions escalated when one individual began uprooting a boundary post that had been erected to mark the border.

This act triggered clashes, during which one person was shot with an arrow and died on the spot, while another survived and is receiving treatment at Kapsowar Mission Hospital.

The county police commander added that firm measures have already been put in place to conduct thorough investigations and arrest all those involved in the attack.

He urged residents to remain calm as efforts continue to find a lasting solution to the boundary dispute.
