In a vibrant display of international partnership and community engagement, the “Path to Russia” (PTR) team recently concluded a meaningful visit to the Marwa schools in Makueni, Kitui County. The visit, centered on cultural exchange and development, highlighted both the potential of the local youth and the urgent infrastructure needs facing these essential educational institutions.
A Collaborative Mission
The PTR team was received with warmth by school leadership, including Mr. Patrick, Principal of Marwa Secondary, and Mr. David, Headteacher of Marwa Comprehensive, alongside local community stakeholders such as the Area Chief, clergy, and the PTA Chair, Mr. Joseph Kimiu. During these discussions, the PTR mission was clear: to foster cultural exchange and explore development partnerships to support the schools’ growth.
The initiative is supported by the All-Russian Public Organization “New Formation,” which focuses on empowering small and medium-sized businesses, further underscoring the collaborative nature of the effort.
Engaging the Future
The impact of the visit was felt by 786 students across the two schools. The engagement was defined by genuine connection and enthusiasm:
- Cultural Discovery: Kate, representing the PTR team, introduced students to basic Russian language and culture in an interactive format that resonated deeply with the learners.
- Academic Support: To bolster learning, the team distributed academic supplies, which served as a significant motivator for student participation.
- Shared Energy: The sessions were described as lively and engaging, leaving a positive, lasting impression on the student body.

Challenges and Opportunities for Growth
While the visit celebrated the spirit of education, the joint meeting with community leaders brought critical infrastructure and operational challenges to the forefront.
The administrators identified several pressing needs:
- Water Scarcity: Currently, the schools rely on expensive and unsustainable privately owned boreholes. Reliable water access is considered the top priority, as it would enable sustainable feeding programs, improve student nutrition, and facilitate potential agricultural income-generating projects.
- Infrastructure Deficits: Both schools face significant gaps, including the need for a girls’ dormitory, renovated sanitation facilities, improved kitchens, and the establishment of an ICT lab. Additionally, Marwa Secondary operates with only one science lab for all subjects.
- Socioeconomic Pressures: Parents frequently struggle with school fees, often resorting to in-kind payments such as firewood or supplies, which creates instability in the schools’ financial planning.
A Hub for Development
Despite these hurdles, the Marwa schools stand as the foundation of education in the community. With the support of local leaders and the commitment of their staff, these institutions are viewed not just as classrooms, but as vital hubs for community development. The visit by the PTR team has underscored the necessity of continued support to ensure these learners can thrive in a sustainable and well-resourced environment.
