CAK distances itself from involvement in Albert Ojwang’s death

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) has distanced itself from allegations circulating on social media regarding its involvement in the death of Albert Ojwang.

According to the authority, it is being accused of releasing information on the whereabout of the slain teacher cum blogger leading to his arrest and detention at Mawego Police Station and subsequent transfer to Central Police Station where he met his untimely death.

The regulator addressed public concern and ongoing online discussions, clarifying its role and denying any involvement in providing data on Ojwang’s whereabouts to law enforcement agencies.

In the press statement dated June 11, 2025, CAK expressed “grave concern” over what it termed as “misleading claims” suggesting the authority supplied real-time location data of the deceased to authorities.

The statement categorically denied these allegations, emphasising that the CAK does not have access to real-time location data of mobile subscribers and does not initiate, direct, or participate in the operational use of data held by telecom license.

The Authority explained that any requests for data from law enforcement are strictly governed by legal provisions, require judicial oversight, and are only fulfilled with a valid court order or lawful request as per Kenyan law.

CAK reiterated its mandate under the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998, which confines its role to oversight and compliance, ensuring licensees adhere to regulatory requirements across sectors such as broadcasting, telecommunications, and cybersecurity.
