Cape Media founder Prof. Gicharu hails Raila as “guiding light” for Kenya’s democracy

Professor Simon Gicharu, Chairman of Cape Media and Founder of Mount Kenya University, has led the Media Company in mourning the passing on of ODM leader Raila Odinga, eulogizing him as a leader of “exceptional courage” and a “guiding light for Kenya’s democratic evolution.”

The tribute from the prominent educator and media leader comes amid a national outpouring of grief following Odinga’s passing from a cardiac arrest this morning in India.

“As a nation, we have lost a leader of exceptional courage,” stated Prof. Gicharu. “His life bore testament to an unwavering commitment to democracy, media freedom, and the pursuit of justice. We celebrate his legacy – not only as a public servant and businessman, but as a guiding light for Kenya’s democratic evolution.”

The solemn statement from the Cape Media founder frames Odinga’s legacy through the lens of his foundational impact on the nation’s institutions and freedoms.

The news of the ODM leader’s passing was confirmed in India, where he collapsed during a morning walk at an Ayurvedic facility in Koothattukulam. He was pronounced dead at the nearby Devamatha Hospital at the age of 80, with his daughter and other relatives by his side.

In response to the loss, President William Ruto addressed the nation, declaring seven days of mourning, postponing all public engagements, and confirming that the former Prime Minister will be accorded a full state funeral. In his address, the President recognized Odinga as “the most significant leader of our democratic experiment.”

Globally, leaders including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have sent their condolences, underscoring Odinga’s international stature.

Meanwhile, Professor Gicharu’s tribute powerfully captures the enduring, institutional legacy of the late ODM leader, whom he describes as a guiding light whose courage and commitment have left an indelible mark on the fabric of the nation he sought to build.
