Cause of Ozzy Osbourne’s death revealed weeks after music icon’s passing

Weeks after the world mourned the loss of heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne, the official cause of his death has now been revealed.

According to a death certificate obtained by The New York Times, the 76-year-old rocker died from a combination of cardiac arrest, a heart attack, and underlying health conditions including coronary artery disease and Parkinson’s disease with autonomic dysfunction.

Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025 but details surrounding the exact cause of his death were kept private until now.

The death certificate, filed at a register office under Hillingdon Council in northwest London, was submitted by his daughter, Aimée Osbourne.

Attempts by the Associated Press to confirm the document with the registry office have so far gone unanswered, and representatives for the Osbourne family have not publicly commented.

Osbourne, known globally as the frontman of Black Sabbath and affectionately nicknamed the “Prince of Darkness,” had lived with Parkinson’s disease for several years, revealing the diagnosis publicly in 2020 after a serious fall.

Though he had been battling health issues and largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent years, he gave a heartfelt final performance in his hometown of Birmingham just weeks before his death.

Fans gathered in large numbers in Birmingham last week to honor the rock icon, laying tributes at landmarks tied to his career. Many were unaware that his passing was due to such a complex mix of health conditions.

During his final concert, Osbourne—seated on a black throne but clearly energized—thanked fans for their years of support. “I’ve been laid up for like six years,” he said. “You have no idea how I feel — thank you from the bottom of my heart. You’re all … special. Let’s go crazy, come on.”

Born in 1949, John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne helped pioneer the heavy metal genre with Black Sabbath before launching a wildly successful solo career.

In the early 2000s, he reached new heights of fame as the unlikely star of The Osbournes, a hit reality show that showcased his family’s chaotic and candid life.
