Nairobi commuters should prepare for significant traffic disruptions on Thursday, August 7, as the city hosts another round of matches for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
A traffic advisory released by Nairobi County’s Officer Commanding Traffic, Joseph Chirchir, details road closures and diversions aimed at managing the flow of fans and officials around the main venues.
The affected roads include:
- Aerodrome Road: Will be closed between the Madaraka and Bunyala roundabouts.
- Lang’ata Road: One side of the road will be closed from the Madaraka Roundabout to the Lusaka Roundabout.
- Mombasa Road: A section will be closed from the Lusaka Roundabout to the Bunyala Roundabout.
To mitigate the inconvenience, Chirchir has provided a list of alternative routes. Motorists on Mombasa Road heading to the CBD are advised to use the Likoni–Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass.
For those on Lang’ata Road, the recommended diversions are via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road. Traffic from the CBD destined for Thika, Ruiru, or Juja should use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.
A specific route has been designated for matatus carrying fans to Kasarani Stadium, directing them through Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road and Ngomongo Road.
The police have issued a strong caution against using Thika Road unless one’s destination is Kasarani Stadium.
This traffic management plan is a critical part of the logistical framework supporting the successful hosting of CHAN 2024, with thousands of spectators and dignitaries expected to attend.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya had previously assured the public of seamless movement, and traffic marshals will be stationed at key junctions to assist motorists and prevent gridlock.
Thursday’s schedule features two matches: Zambia vs. Congo at Nyayo Stadium at 4:00 PM, followed by the highly anticipated clash between Kenya and Angola at Kasarani Stadium at 7:00 PM.
