CHAN: Harambee Stars will still play in a 60%-capacity Kasarani Stadium in the quarter-final

The government has affirmed its readiness to host Friday’s quarter-final match between Kenya and Madagascar at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, as the nation rallies behind the Harambee Stars.

Following a successful match against Zambia, the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya, confirmed that operations were seamless, with no incidents recorded that could attract sanctions from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CS Mvurya expressed confidence in the preparations for the crucial knockout game, noting that measures have been strengthened to ensure smooth gate operations, enhanced security, and improved lighting for a memorable fan experience.

To accommodate the overwhelming fan support, the government, through the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), has increased the number of official fan zones from 10 to 13 in Nairobi.

New locations in Ruiru, Dagoretti’s Camp Toyoyo, and Babadogo have been added to the existing list. Furthermore, in partnership with the County Government of Mombasa, six additional fan zones will be set up across different sub-counties, including Mama Ngina Waterfront and Hassan Joho Stadium.

“To expand access for fans, the Government, through FKF and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), has increased the number of official fan zones from 10 to 13, giving more Kenyans the opportunity to rally behind the national team.

“Ruiru, Dagoretti’s Camp Toyoyo, and Babadogo are the new additions to the existing fan zones located at Uhuru Park, Archives, Dandora, Jacaranda, Clay City, Githurai, Kibra DC Grounds, and Lucky Summer in Kasarani.” The CS Said.

On the issue of ticketing, the Ministry acknowledged the technical challenges on CAF’s online portal but assured fans that the issue is being resolved. Updates on how to access tickets will be communicated once the portal is fully operational.

CS Mvurya also revealed that FKF has appealed to CAF to increase the stadium capacity from 60% to full capacity, following the success of the Zambia match.

He called on Kenyans to uphold the spirit of unity that has defined the tournament and to refrain from divisive rhetoric, emphasizing that CHAN 2024 is a time to unite the country and inspire the national team.
