What was meant to be a peaceful Sunday worship service at AIPCA Igegania Church in Gatundu North, Kiambu County on December 14, 2025, turned chaotic after rival supporters of Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a engaged in a heated shouting match—an incident witnessed by President William Ruto.
The two camps traded slogans in an apparent show of political supremacy, nearly escalating into a physical confrontation.
Some of the hired supporters reportedly disguised themselves as congregants by donning blue AIPCA Women’s Council regalia.
Security officers struggled to contain the situation as the service briefly degenerated into a political showdown, forcing clerics to intervene and calm the charged crowd.
Addressing the congregation, Ng’ang’a defended the government’s recent privatisation of some state assets, saying the move was aimed at unlocking financing for stalled development projects, including roads.
She later signalled her intention to vie for the Kiambu governorship in 2027, pledging to transform villages lacking basic infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Governor Wamatangi dismissed the early campaigns, insisting that the focus should remain on service delivery rather than politics.
He maintained that as the sitting governor, he would continue serving residents and was prepared to defend his seat in 2027.
At the same time, President William Ruto urged Kiambu leaders and residents to embrace unity, warning against divisive politics and disorder. He drew parallels with the unity recently achieved within the AIPCA church, stressing that leadership would not be won through insults or incitement.
With two years to the 2027 General Election, the incident underscored the intensifying political rivalry in Kiambu County. While Ng’ang’a has been actively selling her agenda across the county, Wamatangi has focused on grassroots development initiatives.
Leaders in attendance included National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Kiambu Woman Representative Ann Wamuratha, EALA MP Maina Karobia, Kiambaa MP Njuguna Kawanjiku, Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, Laikipia West MP Wachira Karani, Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia, and Cabinet Secretaries Alice Wahome and William Kabogo.
The leaders defended the government, saying it has continued to deliver quality services to Kenyans.
