CITAM condemns police brutality, calls for justice for victims

The Christ Is The Answer Ministries (CITAM) has come out to condemn the ongoing cases of police brutality and unexplained deaths of innocent Kenyans, including that of the late teacher and blogger, Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody.

“The last few weeks have been marked by a sense of national grief,” the statement read in part, pointing out the unfortunate death of Ojwang’ and the subsequent events.

“The church joins a growing chorus of civil society groups, religious leaders, and citizens decrying excessive use of force by security forces during the recent protests.

Through its presiding Bishop, Rev. Calisto Odede, the ministry raised alarm over the alleged harassment and shooting of an innocent hawker along the streets of the Nairobi Central Business District by police officers, terming it a total disregard of human life and an act of absolute impunity.

The statement went further to criticize unnamed state actors for hiring ‘armed goons’ to attack peaceful demonstrators and destroy property, branding such acts as attempts to suppress the voices of dissent.

“Why can’t our leaders understand that there is collective anger and grief due to those cold-blooded, murderous acts where some police officers act as both the judges and the executioners?” the statement questioned.

The ministry further compared the current state of affairs in the country to biblical times, invoking prophetic judgment against injustice.

“Like the spilled blood of Abel that was crying out from the ground, the blood of all these innocent Kenyans is crying out for justice.”

CITAM further urged for the arrest and full prosecution of all perpetrators, including those complicit in covering up the atrocities, warning that justice cannot be achieved by “mere resignation of individuals of whatever level.

In a parting plea to the government, Rev. Odede Stated, “You shall not murder is an important biblical dictum that safeguards the sanity of a nation,” further calling for proper and sensitive actions to restore national confidence in both the government and security apparatus.

The CITAM Statement comes amidst ongoing nationwide calls by young people, demanding justice and accountability over the rising cases of alleged police brutality, and long-term reforms in the governance system of the country.
