Chief Justice Martha Koome eulogized the Late Chief Kadhi Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein as a prayerful man, who served with integrity.
During her visit at the late Chief Kadhi’s home in Mombasa, Martha Koome was in the company of Justices Daniel Musinga (PCA), Agnes Murgor, Grace Ngenye, Anthony Mrima, Jairus Ngaah, Chief Registrar Winfridah Mokaya, Chief magistrate Alex Ithuku, Deputy Chief Kadhi Sukyan Hassan, among others.
In her condolence message, Martha Koome recounted the legacy the Late Chief Kadhi has left in the judicial service in Kenya.
For instance, he was the first Kadhi who had his cases reported at the Kenya Law Report.
She highlighted how the late Chief Kadhi was hardworking and his vision towards the judiciary, and how he had organized with the Chief Justice of Zanzibar to bring the Kadhi’s of Zanzibar to come and learn from the Kenyan Judicial system. Unfortunately, the Late Chief Kadhi did not live to achieve this dream.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Community is in a dilemma over who will take over as the Chief Kadhi after the demise of Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein.
He was described as a scholar who passionately did his work with dedication to ensure justice to the Muslim community across the country.
Although he did not live to enjoy his hard work, the Muslim Community hope that the next Chief Kadhi will ensure he finishes the work that had been started by the late Chief Kadhi.
He set a good example to the Muslim community and many remember him for being a prayerful man.
Sheikh Athman Abdulhalim Hussein died on July 10, 2025 at his home in Mombasa.
His death was announced today on X by Sheikh Jamaludin Osman, the Imam of Jamia Mosque.
He was appointed as Kenya’s Chief Kadhi in July 2023 after a recruitment process led by the Judicial Service Commission.
He was selected from among five candidates who had been shortlisted to succeed Sheikh Ahmed Muhdhar, who retired after serving for 12 years and attaining the age of 60.
