Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in Isiolo County have halted their services in protest over the county government’s failure to remit their allowances.
Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday August 12, 2025, the 790 CHPs revealed they have not received any payments from the county government for the past two years, despite continuing to work closely with the health department.
CHP Chairperson Mary Gacheri stated that the workers have only been receiving stipends from the national government, while repeated appeals to county officials have gone unanswered.
She accused the county health department of offering nothing but unfulfilled promises.
Another member, Peter Ekal, announced that the CHPs will stop submitting reports to the county health department until their demands are addressed.
He said their dedication has been taken for granted and urged the governor to intervene, warning that the workers’ patience has run out.
Thomas Echwa, also speaking at the press briefing, described the treatment of the CHPs as unacceptable and cautioned that it sends a strong message about how health workers are valued.
He warned that if the matter is not resolved promptly, the workers are prepared to stage public demonstrations.
