Concern after video shows uniformed police officer appearing drunk in Homa Bay

Kenyans have taken to social media to express concern after a video circulated online showing a police officer in Kendu Bay, Homa Bay County, appearing visibly intoxicated while on duty.

The widely shared clip captures the officer, dressed in full police uniform, staggering along a busy public road in broad daylight.

At several points, he struggles to maintain his balance and briefly stops, turning around and seemingly muttering to himself before continuing to walk.

In the background of the footage, members of the public can be heard commenting on the officer’s condition, with one voice remarking in Kiswahili that the officer appeared drunk.

The video quickly drew strong reactions online, with many Kenyans questioning the professionalism of the officer and calling on the National Police Service to take swift action.

Others raised concerns about public safety, noting that officers are entrusted with protecting citizens and enforcing the law.

As of now, the identity of the officer captured in the footage has not been officially confirmed, and police authorities are yet to issue a formal statement on the incident.

The Kendu Bay episode has revived memories of a similar incident reported in Migori County in September 2025.

In that case, a senior police officer was arrested after attending an official Interior Ministry function while intoxicated, sparking public outrage and prompting disciplinary action.

The latest footage has once again placed the conduct of police officers under scrutiny, with Kenyans urging the service to enforce discipline within its ranks and uphold the standards expected of law enforcement officers.

Calls have also emerged for the National Police Service to strengthen internal oversight mechanisms and address substance abuse issues among officers to maintain public trust and confidence.
