The County Government of Mombasa has rolled out a new initiative aimed at strengthening Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) across the county.
The programme involves the distribution of standardized learning diaries to all public ECDE centres, a move intended to enhance the monitoring and tracking of learners’ progress from an early age.
According to Mombasa County Deputy Governor Francis Thoya and Dr Mbwarali Kame, Mombasa County Education CEC, the diaries will act as a critical education monitoring tool, capturing detailed information on a child’s learning development while also reflecting the impact of investments made by the county in the education sector, particularly at the ECDE and lower primary levels.

The data collected through the diaries is expected to play a key role in guiding informed education planning and policy decisions.
Officials say the information will help identify gaps in learning, determine areas requiring additional support, and inform the need for expanded learning facilities and other education infrastructure across the county.
Beyond monitoring academic progress, the diaries are also designed to strengthen collaboration between teachers and parents.
By providing a structured platform for regular feedback and communication, the initiative seeks to encourage greater parental involvement in a child’s early learning journey, which experts say is crucial for holistic development.

The county government believes the initiative will enhance accountability within ECDE centres, improve planning, and ultimately raise the overall quality of early childhood education in Mombasa.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that early tracking of learners’ progress lays a strong foundation for improved learning outcomes in later years.
