Couple married for 18 years shares how their love began with a mistaken KSh 50 airtime transfer

Ibrahim Maina and his wife, Janet Waithera, from Uasin Gishu County, have been married for more than 18 years, but their remarkable love story began with something as simple as a misplaced KSh 50 airtime transfer.

At the time, Ibrahim worked as a mobile airtime vendor, moving from place to place as he served customers.

One day, he mistakenly sent KSh 50 worth of airtime to the wrong number, an error that would unexpectedly change his life.

Realizing the mistake immediately after completing the transaction, Ibrahim dialed the unintended recipient and politely asked if she could return the airtime.

To his surprise, she agreed without hesitation. “She returned it, and I was shocked,” Ibrahim recalled. “I wondered, kwani huyu ni mzuri aje? It’s rare to find such honesty.”

On the other end of the line was Janet, who at the time was in Murang’a County. She confirmed the interaction, explaining that she was initially unsure how to reverse the airtime but followed Ibrahim’s guidance.

“He told me to dial *140*, send back KSh 40, and remain with KSh 10. That’s how it started,” she said.

Their conversation soon extended beyond airtime. Ibrahim sent her a photo and opened up about his physical disability, requesting that she should not be alarmed.

Janet admitted she was surprised at first, but her feelings had already begun to grow. “I encouraged myself. Since I had already fallen in love, I decided to embrace whatever came with it,” she said.

What began as a simple act of honesty soon blossomed into friendship, courtship, and ultimately marriage.
