The Milimani Magistrate’s Court has allowed the withdrawal of hate speech case against Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya after he complied with court directives.
In his ruling, Magistrate Paul Mutai said there was sufficient evidence showing that the MP had participated in peace campaigns that reached at least 1,000 people.
The court was also presented with evidence that Salasya is running a peace campaign on social media.
Magistrate Mutai noted that the peace initiative is a continuous exercise and that the MP had committed to sustaining the campaign. Consequently, the court ordered the withdrawal of the charges under the relevant section of the law.
The court had earlier declined to withdraw the case until Salasya met specific conditions, including issuing a public apology and actively participating in a social media peace campaign.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), through prosecutor Nora Achieng, had applied for the withdrawal of the case, stating that there was an agreement between the accused and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to resolve the matter out of court.
