The High Court has directed Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and DCI Director Amin Mohammed to produce missing activist and blogger Ndiangui Kinyagia in court after he went missing for 10 days.
Justice Chacha Mwita issued the order on Monday June 30, 2025 following a petition by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), after Kinyagia disappeared on June 21.
The blogger, known for mobilizing youth-led protests online, vanished just days before the June 25 demonstrations in honor of the victims of the June 2024 protests.
The court declared the prolonged detention unconstitutional, citing a violation of Article 49 of the Kenyan Constitution, which requires that arrested persons be presented in court within 24 hours.
Kinyagia had posted detailed protest plans, including a symbolic march to State House, prompting concerns that he was targeted for his activism.
Rights organizations, including Amnesty Kenya and KHRC, have condemned the incident as an enforced disappearance.
A social media campaign under the hashtag #FreeNdianguiKinyagia continues to gain traction, with many calling for his immediate release and police accountability.
IG Kanja and DCI Amin have until Tuesday to comply with the court order or face further legal action.
