CS Murkomen declares a public holiday in honor of Raila

The Government of Kenya has declared Friday, October 17, 2025, a public holiday in observance of the state funeral of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga alias “Baba”.

This announcement was made through Gazette Notice No. 15007, that was published on Thursday, October 16, 2025. The notice reads, “It is notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, the 17th October, 2025, shall be a public holiday in honor of the departed former Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga.”

While the official burial of Raila Odinga is scheduled for Sunday, October 19, 2025, the Friday public holiday coincides with the state funeral ceremonies. These include public viewing at Nyayo National Stadium, memorial services, official tributes, and opportunities for citizens across their country to pay their respects.

Nyayo National Stadium, located in Nairobi, is a symbol of national pride and has hosted numerous significant events, including national celebrations and sports competitions. The choice of this venue for Odinga’s state funeral service underscores the importance of the occasion and provides a space for thousands of Kenyans to pay their respects.

Government offices, schools, and many businesses will be closed, ensuring that Kenyans have the opportunity to participate in national mourning. Flags across the country have been flying at half-mast since news of Odinga’s passing was confirmed, and condolence books have been opened in government offices, embassies, and party offices.

Raila Odinga’s passing has elicited condolences from across the globe. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, highlighting Odinga’s contributions to strengthening India-Kenya relations and his admiration for Ayurveda. Additionally, President William Ruto declared a seven-day period of national mourning, underscoring Odinga’s status as a “giant of democracy.”

Deputy Kindiki outlined the process from repatriating Raila’s body to the burial slated for Sunday at his Bondo home as follows:

Thursday,

12:00 pm – 5:00pm-The body is moved to the Parliamentary buildings in the NairobiCBD for public viewing. There will also be public grieving places where Kenyans can watch the proceedings across the country.

5:00 pm-Raila’s body returns to Lee Funeral Home.

Friday, October 17, 2025: State funeral service at Nyayo National Stadium starting at 8:00 AM, followed by a procession to the family home in Karen for an overnight vigil.

Saturday, October 18, 2025: Public viewing at Moi Stadium, Kisumu, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, then a procession to Bondo for an overnight vigil.

Sunday, October 19, 2025: Burial at Opoda Farm, Siaya County, in accordance with Odinga’s wish to be interred within 72 hours of his passing.
